What Is Permission to PAUSE?
When you’re caring for someone you love, there is always someone or something that feels more urgent than you.
Permission to PAUSE is an approach to self-care that works in real life – in the minutes between meetings, the quiet moment before bed, or the breath you take before walking through the door at home.
It isn’t about adding more to your already full schedule. It’s about creating small, intentional pauses that help you notice how you are, what you need, and what matters most right now.
Many working, unpaid carers tell us they feel guilty taking time for themselves. They push through exhaustion because there’s always something more urgent. They wait for permission that never comes.
This is your permission.
The PAUSE Framework
The PAUSE Framework offers five interconnected ways of caring for yourself sustainably. Each element can be practised on its own, but together they create a flexible approach that grows with you.

Prioritise Your Body
Caring asks a great deal of your body. Prioritising it isn’t selfish. It’s one of the ways you sustain yourself for the long term. This means realistic, energising practices that actually fit your day, not aspirational routines that require time you don’t have.
Anchor Your Emotions
Caring often brings difficult emotions. Anchoring them doesn’t mean ignoring them. It means giving them a safe place to land so they don’t carry you away.
Unwind Your Mind
Caring can create constant mental load – planning care schedules, solving work problems, anticipating what might go wrong, remembering what needs doing. Unwinding your mind creates small moments of space to think, breathe and simply be. Moments to step away from constant mentally, even if only for a few minutes.
Strengthen Meaningful Connection
Caring can feel surprisingly lonely, even when you’re surrounded by people. This element is about reconnecting with what sustains you – your values, your purpose, and the relationships that matter.
It might be faith, creativity, nature, or simply time with someone who sees you as more than a carer or employee. Whatever feeds your spirit belongs here.
Embed What Works
Self-care isn’t useful if it becomes another pressure or another thing you’re failing at. This element is about building a personal way of caring for yourself. that integrates sustainable practices into your actual daily life – not an idealised version of it.
You choose what works. You adapt when circumstances change. You keep what helps and release what doesn’t.
There Is No Right Way to PAUSE
Permission to PAUSE isn’t a prescription or another list of things to get right.
Some days you might return to the same part of the framework again and again. Other days you’ll naturally move between different elements.
Trust your own experience.
The power isn’t in doing everything perfectly. It’s in discovering small pauses that genuinely support you, and returning to them whenever you need them.
Continue Your PAUSE Journey
Permission to PAUSE comes to life through a growing collection of gentle resources designed to support unpaid carers in everyday life.
